Shenseea
Shenseea is a Jamaican singer and rapper from Kingston, Jamaica. She is best known for dancehall music, while also working across trap, hip-hop, pop and R&B-influenced styles. Born Chinsea Linda Lee in 1996, she performs under the name Shenseea.
Early career and breakthrough
She begins her career as a promo girl before signing with Lemuel Samuel’s Rockstar. Her first major recognition comes from a remix of Vybz Kartel’s song “Loodi”, and she also appears on a side stage at Reggae Sumfest in 2015. By 2017, she moves on to the main stage at the festival. As her profile grows, she tours internationally and works closely with Romeich Entertainment.
Collaborations and wider profile
Shenseea builds a reputation for collaborations with artists from Jamaica and the United States. In 2017, she teams up with Sean Paul on the single “Rolling” and joins him on the European leg of his tour. In 2018, she appears on Christina Aguilera’s album Liberation on the track “Right Moves”. She also releases “Secret (Remix)” with Vybz Kartel in October 2018.
In 2019, she signs with Interscope Records and releases “Blessed” with Tyga, a hip-hop and dancehall track that becomes one of her best-known songs. In January 2020, she works with Rvssian on “IDKW”, featuring Swae Lee and Young Thug. She later appears on Masego’s Studying Abroad and Major Lazer’s Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded) in 2021, and also features on Kanye West’s Donda on “Pure Souls”, alongside Roddy Ricch, and “Ok Ok Pt 2” with Rooga. She is also present on stage during West’s Chicago Donda event.
Awards and recognition
Her awards include Young Hot and Hype Artiste at the Youth View Awards, Breakout Celebrity of 2016, and Collaboration of the Year for “Loodi” in 2016. She wins Best Reggae Act at the MOBO Awards in 2021. Her work on Donda brings her a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year at the 2022 awards, her first Grammy nomination. She also receives a nomination for Best International Act at the BET Awards in 2022.
Albums and later releases
In 2021, Shenseea signs with Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, also known as Salxo, who manages The Weeknd and Doja Cat. She releases “Lick” featuring Megan Thee Stallion in 2022, and it appears on her debut album Alpha, which debuts at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. The album is followed by Never Gets Late Here in 2024, her second album. That record includes “Die for You”, “Hit and Run” and “Dating Szn”, and it continues her move between dancehall, pop and hip-hop.
Style and reach
Shenseea is known for energetic performances, sharp lyrics and a style that moves between dancehall and mainstream crossover music. Alongside music, she secures corporate sponsorship deals with Telecom, Firm Flow, Boom and Pepsi-Cola JA.
