Shawn Mendes is a Canadian singer and songwriter from Pickering, Canada. He is born in 1998 and becomes known in 2013 after posting song covers on Vine, where he builds an early following.
In 2014, he signs to Island Records after attracting the attention of artist manager Andrew Gertler and A&R executive Ziggy Chareton. His self-titled debut EP appears the same year, followed by his first studio album, Handwritten, in 2015.
Albums and singles
Handwritten debuts at number one on the US Billboard 200. Its single “Stitches” reaches number one in the UK and enters the top 10 in the US and Canada. His second album, Illuminate (2016), also debuts at number one in the US, with “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” reaching the top 10 in several countries.
His third self-titled album appears in 2018 and is led by “In My Blood”. Its number one debut in the US makes him the third-youngest artist to achieve three number one albums. In 2019, he releases “If I Can’t Have You” and “Señorita”, with “Señorita” reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. His fourth studio album, Wonder (2020), makes him the youngest male artist to top the Billboard 200 with four studio albums.
Style and recognition
His music is associated with folk pop, piano rock, pop, pop rock, pop soul, and teen pop. He wins 13 SOCAN awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, eight Juno Awards, eight iHeartRadio MMVAs, and two American Music Awards. He also receives three Grammy Award nominations and one Brit Award nomination. In 2018, Time includes him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
