Shannon Wright is a US singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist based in Atlanta, Georgia. She is from Jacksonville and Chapel Hill, and is known for work that moves between experimental, folk rock, indie rock and singer-songwriter styles.

Career

Wright fronts the rock trio Crowsdell in the 1990s and records two albums with the group, Dreamette and In the curve of an arm. Her writing, guitar playing and vocals are a central part of that band’s sound.

She begins her solo career with Flightsafety in 1999, a release built around a gentle acoustic approach. Maps of Tacit follows in 2000 and brings a more forceful vocal style. She continues in that direction on Dyed in the Wool (2001) and Over the Sun (2004), both recorded with Steve Albini.

Collaborations and later releases

In 2004, Wright works with French musician Yann Tiersen on Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright. Her later records shift towards a softer blend of folk and rock, alongside darker passages. This period includes Let in the Light (2007), Honeybee Girls (2009) and Secret Blood (2010).

In Film Sound (2013) returns to rougher indie rock textures. On Division (2017), she uses a more fragile keyboard-led sound with sampling and electronic beats. Providence (2019) is centred mainly on piano and carries a more haunting tone.

Live work

Wright is a regular touring artist and performs widely, including dates in South Dakota and Brazil. Her concerts are described as intense rock performances built around her vocal style and multi-instrumental approach. She is also chosen by Sleater-Kinney and Nick Cave to open some of their US tour dates.
