Shannon and the Clams
Shannon and the Clams are a US indie garage punk quartet from California, based in Oakland, and active since 2009. The group consists of Shannon Shaw and King Lollipop, along with two other members, and their music sits within garage rock, garage punk and lo-fi scenes.
Style and influences
The band is known for a vintage-leaning sound that brings together doo-wop, classic R&B, garage psych and surf music. Their songs often use harmonies and background vocals that recall 1960s girl groups, while their overall style also draws comparisons with Buddy Holly and other early rock and pop acts. The group’s influences include The Beach Boys, The Shangri-Las, The Ronettes and Patsy Cline, alongside a rougher edge associated with The Cramps, Bad Brains and Nobunny.
Songwriting and sound
Shannon Shaw’s vocals are a central part of the band’s sound, often described as combining a plaintive, 1960s-style delivery with an unpolished garage-punk feel. Songs such as “When You’re On” show the band’s use of bittersweet harmonies, guitar riffs and a retro pop structure shaped by surf and garage traditions.
