Shackleton

Shackleton is a UK electronic artist from Lancashire whose work sits around dubstep, post-dubstep and tribal ambient, with a strong connection to the darker end of minimal techno and dubstep. He co-runs the Woe to the Septic Heart! label and is associated with the projects Holy Tongue meets Shackleton and Light-Space Modulator.

Skull Disco and early sound

He co-runs the Skull Disco label with Appleblim between 2005 and 2008. Across that period, his music develops from a sparse minimal-techno framework with an early influence from Muslimgauze into a stripped, skeletal form of dubstep built around drop structure and dense sound design. His final Skull Disco release is Soundboy's Suicide Note, which also marks the label's last release.

His production in this phase is marked by loopy drum programming, heavy bass and psychedelic detail, with a style that pushes rhythmic and sonic elements into extreme forms rather than resolving them conventionally.

Woe to the Septic Heart! and later work

Shackleton starts his Woe to the Septic Heart! imprint in 2010, after which his output becomes more varied in tone and colour. A key release from this period is the triple LP Music for the Quiet Hour / The Drawbar Organ, which uses bright organ tones alongside polyrhythms, cavernous sound design and vocal manipulation. His later work continues to centre on mystical minimal techno, but with a broader palette than the earlier Skull Disco material.
