Shack

Shack are an English rock and indie group from Liverpool, active from 1987 to the present. The band is built around brothers Mick Head, known as Michael Head, and John Head, who come from the Kensington area of Liverpool. Their recorded line-up has included Mick Head on vocals and guitar, John Head on guitar, Justin Smith on bass, and Mick Hurst on drums. The verified membership also includes Pete Wilkinson and Peter Wilkinson.

Background

Before Shack, Mick and John Head play in The Pale Fountains in the 1980s. That group signs to Virgin and releases two albums in 1986. After The Pale Fountains end, the death of bassist Chris McCaffrey has a major effect on the brothers’ path.

Albums and recordings

Shack first return in 1988 with Zilch, their debut album. It is followed in 1991 by Waterpistol, which is recorded in difficult circumstances and later gains a reputation as a lost classic. The album eventually appears on Marina after delays caused by the loss of the master tape and the collapse of the label. The band later releases HMS Fable, then ...The Corner of Miles and Gil on Noel’s label Sour Mash Records. Their greatest hits compilation, Time Machine, appears in 2007 and includes two new tracks.

Related projects

In 1997, the Heads form The Strands and record The Magical World Of The Strands. John Head later performs live with his band The Streams, while Michael Head starts Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band on his own label, Violette Records.

Activity and performances

Shack tour with Arthur Lee of Love as his backing band. They play together again in 2010 at a charity event in Winsford. Their most recent album is from 2006, and their most recent concert is in 2010.
