Sextile is a post-punk and electronic group from Los Angeles, United States. The band forms in 2015 and remains active. Its core line-up centres on Brady Keehn, who performs vocals, guitar and electronics, and Melissa Scaduto, who performs drums, electronics and guitar. Other members include Eddie Wuebben and Cameron Michel.

Background

Sextile forms after Keehn and Scaduto relocate from Brooklyn, New York to Los Angeles. The group takes its name from the astrological aspect of the same name. After supporting Ritual Howls at local gigs, it signs to Felte Records and releases its debut album, A Thousand Hands, in the same year it forms. Kenny Elkin joins the band on bass shortly after the original formation, alongside multi-instrumentalist Eddie Wuebben.

Releases and line-up changes

The second album, Albeit Living, appears in 2017. By that point, Cameron Michel replaces Elkin on bass. In 2018, the band releases the single “Current Affair” and later the EP 3, at which stage it is reduced to the two founding members. Sextile enters a hiatus in 2019 while Keehn and Scaduto work on other projects, Panther Modern and S. Product.

The band returns with “Modern Weekend” and “Contortion” in March 2022; both tracks are written after Wuebben’s death. For tour dates in Mexico and the United States later that year, Michel rejoins on guitar and keyboards and Lia Simone Braswell joins on drums. Sextile releases its third album, Push, on Sacred Bones Records, and later announces and releases its fourth studio album, yes, please., also on Sacred Bones Records.

Style

Sextile’s sound is described as post-punk and electronic rock, with its early work drawing on industrial, surf punk, psychobilly and ambient music. The band’s influences during that period include Christian Death, Coil, Brian Eno, The Cramps and The Haxan Cloak. Albeit Living shifts towards synth-punk and is associated with Circle X, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft and Chrome. The 3 EP expands the electronic side of the music and brings in EBM and darkwave elements, while Push shows stronger influence from electronic dance music.
