Setwun
Setwun is the project of Sydney artist Josh Panakera-Molony, who works as a composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ. He is based in Eora (Sydney) and operates within the city’s underground music scene. The project also appears in live band form with The Soulstranauts, and the verified membership for the act is East Coast Collective.
Releases and collaborations
Setwun releases music across a range of styles, from low-slung grooves to dancefloor tempos, with a strong soul-jazz influence running through the work. A debut solo EP, Our World, is issued through Naarm (Melbourne) collective Mandarin Dreams. He also records as part of a collaboration project, Yeah Definitely, with Sydney producer and OTIS Records head Hugh B.
Reception and performances
His output attracts support from figures and outlets including Stamp The Wax, Gilles Peterson, Alexander Nut, Carista, Steve Spacek and Touching Bass. Bradley Zero also champions the project, leading to performances and releases through the Rhythm Section imprint. Setwun appears on internationally followed radio stations including NTS and Redlight Radio, and has played support sets for artists including Amp Fiddler and Onra.
Style
Setwun’s productions and sets centre on connection, communication and movement. The music is described through its percussion, breadth and soul-led character, with a sound that moves between club-oriented rhythms and more open-ended, melodic forms.
