Serotonin Thieves
Serotonin Thieves are a London-based house music production and DJ duo made up of Scott Serotonin and Ryan Serotonin. They work as both producers and label owners, and are associated with tech house, with a sound built around groove-heavy percussion, sub-bass, glitch vocals and other electronic effects.
Origins and early development
The duo form after a chance meeting in the Caribbean in 2002, when they connect over a shared interest in dance music and begin experimenting as a DJ act. They spend several years DJing on London’s party scene and developing their studio work before their productions start to attract wider attention.
Releases, labels and support
Their early output appears on labels including Natura Viva, Bedroom Bedlam, Emotive Sounds, Bamboo Music and Recovery Tech. Their work later gains support from DJs including Richie Hawtin, Umek, Claude VonStroke and Loco Dice. One of their tracks is selected for Pete Tong’s Fast Trax show, a platform that also identifies the then-unknown Swedish producer Avicii.
In 2011 they launch their own label, Serotonin Digital. Through the label they release music by a range of artists including David Herrero, Groovebox, Jaceo, Wade, Tripmastaz, My Digital Enemy, Angel Stoxx, Kyle Watson, Leisuregroove, Marcella and Lucio Spain, alongside other newer producers.
Airplay and performances
Their music receives play on Radio 1, Kiss FM, Capital FM, Galaxy, Ibiza Global Radio, BNL and Radio 538 in the Netherlands, with support from a wide range of DJs including Stephan Bodzin and Tiësto. They also host a show on London’s Passion FM, which broadcasts every Sunday.
As DJs, they play clubs including Ministry of Sound and Egg in London, alongside dates in Ibiza and Miami, and they hold a residency in Berlin.
Style
Serotonin Thieves describe their music as focused on tension and release, movement and collective dance, with the aim of taking listeners away from everyday stresses. Their production style is presented as celebratory and rhythm-driven, with an emphasis on the physical impact of the beat.
