Serocee is a UK dancehall and hip hop artist from Small Heath in Birmingham. He spends part of his childhood in Kingston, Jamaica, where he first encounters reggae and develops an early connection to Jamaican music.

Background

He grows up in a strict Christian household where reggae is not allowed, although church choir singing remains part of family life. He writes his first melody at the age of eight. On returning to Birmingham, he finds the transition difficult and responds to local conflict by developing verbal battle skills, later describing long sessions of lyrical cussing as the basis for his style.

Early groups and battle reputation

At 14, Serocee forms a rap group called Crossfire. The group achieves local success and works with Pato Banton. He also wins rap battles at the Porsche and Q clubs, and he develops his technique by watching artists he admires from the sidelines. His influences include Cutty Ranks, Macka B, Shabba Ranks, Ninjaman, Tiger, Mad Cobra and Papa San.

Career

He moves to London in 1999 and becomes active as a solo artist. He describes himself as a hip hop master while keeping strong reggae and dancehall roots in his work. He gains radio play for his tracks and works with Darkjoint, Cavey, Karl Hinds, Urban Monk, Premier Williams and 76 as producers.

His debut solo album is titled Second Generation Windrush Pickney.
