Seiji
Seiji is the UK electronic producer Paul Dolby, from London. He starts out as a classically trained cellist before moving into production after discovering hardcore techno, jungle and later US house in the early 1990s. His work spans broken beat, nu jazz, acid jazz, downtempo and breakbeat.
Early releases and Reinforced
His recording debut is as producer, engineer, keyboard player, drum programmer and vocalist on Dai Bass’ Reach Out Of The Darkness. His first releases appear on Reinforced, the influential jungle and drum and bass label, and this period leads to an album with Mark Lipka, also known as G-Force. Their album Just Another Number appears in 1999 on Reinforced.
Bugz in the Attic and Co-Op
Seiji begins collaborating with Orin Walters, known as Afronaught, and they form Bugz in the Attic. The group grows into a West London collective of eight members and sets up a studio and label. Bugz in the Attic also runs the Sunday club night and institution Co-Op. They become known for remixes for artists including 4hero, Macy Gray and Amy Winehouse, and later sign to V2.
With V2, Bugz in the Attic release a remixes album, the studio album Back In The Doghouse, and the singles Booty La La and Move Aside. Seiji also releases Loose Lips on the group’s Bitasweet label during this period.
Solo work and collaborations
As a solo remixer, Seiji works on tracks by Alicia Keys, Basement Jaxx, Erykah Badu and Crookers featuring Kid Cudi. After leaving Bugz in the Attic in 2007, he works with Róisín Murphy, producing and co-writing much of Overpowered, including the title track.
His later releases include the fully electronic, instrumental album DJ Tools, the single Todo Mundo, and the seijigoodies series, which is available for complimentary download from his website. He also releases the single Seiji4 and records on Sonar Kollektiv.
