Seekae

Seekae is a Sydney electronic group formed in 2006 by Alex Cameron and George Nicholas, with John Hassell also joining the early line-up. Cameron and Nicholas are primary school alumni who meet again after eight years, and the three begin making electronic music together after experimenting separately at home. The group is active from 2006 to the present.

Releases and style

Seekae’s debut album, The Sound of Trees Falling on People, appears in 2008 and attracts critical attention for its ambient sound. The record receives strong reviews, is described by Rolling Stone as atmospheric and immersive, and is named by FBI radio as one of Australia’s top ten albums of the decade. The band’s music is associated with ambient, glitch, chillout and electronica, with a broader electronic base.

In 2011 the group releases its second album, +Dome. The album shows a development in the band’s approach, combining live instrumentation with electronics and samples gathered over two years of performing, touring and writing. It also draws on the sound and textures of Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago and London. Reviews note the mix of organic and technical elements, together with expanded use of strings and more developed guitar work alongside the group’s synth-led style.

Live activity and recognition

After the debut album, Seekae tours extensively and supports acts including PVT, Mount Kimbie, Broadcast, Cloud Control, Decoder Ring and the Midnight Juggernauts. The group also sells out its own headline shows. At the Sydney Music Arts and Culture Awards, listeners recognise the band as Best Live Act.
