Secret Sirens

Secret Sirens is a Leeds-based pop project led by singer, songwriter and keyboardist Narelle Frances and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Siron. The pair write and produce their own music, and describe it through dramatic indie pop, with a large soundscape and catchy pop structures.

Origins and members

Narelle Frances is Yorkshire born and has family roots in St Helena through her maternal grandmother. Andrew Siron is also Yorkshire born. The name Secret Sirens links to Siron’s surname and to the idea of sirens from Greek mythology.

Music and influences

The duo’s songs draw on fantasy, mythology, love and hate, and Narelle says that family and friends often inspire her writing. She also refers to her grandmother’s life and background as an influence. The pair name David Bowie, The Beatles, Elton John and Prince among their inspirations, while also drawing on Grimm Brothers fairytales and other mystical themes. Narelle says soaps and true-life documentaries also feed into her creativity.

Live work and collaborations

Secret Sirens have performed alongside Corinne Bailey Rae, Mica Paris, The View, The Pigeon Detectives, You Me At Six and Goldie Lookin’ Chain. They have also performed at a Christmas party at designer Karen Millen’s house above a swimming pool. Before Secret Sirens, the two had worked together in other musical projects and had indie chart success, as well as Top 10 remixes in the Commercial Club Charts.

Style

The project presents itself as a two-person act built around creating a big, dramatic sound. Andrew Siron says the appeal is that the pair make all the noise and drama themselves.
