Scriptures

Scriptures form in 2008 in the United States, emerging from the remnants of the indie rock band This Is A Process of A Still Life, also known as Process. The group is based around musicians from Missoula, Montana: bassist Jason Ward, drummer Baine Craft, and guitarists Burke Jam and Scott Kennedy relocate to Seattle, Washington, where guitarist David Totten joins them.

Style and musical direction

The band draws inspiration from Western soundtracks, post-apocalyptic literature, and the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Their earlier post-rock sound gives way to darker, heavier material, with compositions that combine soft and heavy passages, intricate melodies, distorted guitars, and more experimental structures. Their music also brings together elements associated with the West, world music, and metal.

Name change and lineup

As the contrast between the earlier recordings and the new material becomes clear, the band adopts the name Scriptures. When Burke Jam moves back to Missoula in 2009, the group adds multi-instrumentalist Jeff Forrest. In 2011, Scott Kennedy leaves to pursue other musical interests and Casey Alexander joins on baritone guitar.

Recording and live activity

In late 2009, Scriptures gather material for their first full-length album and enter the studio to record it. The sessions involve audio engineer Jackson Justice Long of Hear Me Shimmer Recording Co., mixing by Long and Jeff Forrest of Birds Inverted Music, and mastering by Blake Bickel of Dynamic Sound Services. Recording takes place at Two Sticks Audio and at home. The band also shares stages with Earth, Arbouretum, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Midday Veil, Pontiak, The Luna Moth, and The Curious Mystery.
