Scientist

Scientist is the recording name of Jamaican dub producer Hopeton Brown, also known as Overton Brown, from Kingston, Jamaica. He works in dub and reggae, and is also associated with dubstep.

Career

Brown begins his career as an engineer at King Tubby’s studio in 1978 and soon becomes a protégé of Tubby. By 1980, he develops a reputation for a distinctive mixing style, building on the adventurous approach that marks his early work in reggae and dub.

Notable release

He becomes widely known when Rockstar Games uses the album Scientist Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires in 2001, bringing his name to a broader audience.

Notes

The name Scientist also refers to a separate Chicago-based metal, sludge, punk and experimental noise project, but the Jamaican dub producer is the primary act associated with the name.
