School of Rock

School of Rock is a music education group based in Charlotte, made up of students from the Charlotte, North Carolina area music school. It operates as an after-school music programme with a performance-based approach, accepting students at different skill levels and aiming to get them playing live before an audience.

Music education programme

The organisation is formerly known as The Paul Green School of Rock Music. It runs and franchises after-school instruction schools in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines. At its widest reach, it serves more than 17,000 students across 140 locations in 8 countries, and it becomes the largest after-school music programme in the United States.

Alongside its main student programme, it offers a pre-school introduction to music for children aged two through six. The most advanced students in each school form a band and perform concerts in their own city. Top students can be selected for an “All-Star” band that tours regionally. The organisation also expands into career development for working bands and a “Grad School” programme for adult amateur musicians.

Guest musicians and performance work

Successful musicians occasionally appear as guest professors and perform with the students. The School of Rock name also appears in connection with the film of the same name, where it is associated with music performed by Jack Black and The Mooney Suzuki, although the soundtrack is credited to various artists.
