Scarlet Mae

Scarlet Mae is a Dutch band led by singer, songwriter and pianist Marije van Rijn. The group plays pop with elements of jazz and folk, and its music is described as shifting between understated and more exuberant approaches, with a strong focus on memorable choruses.

Early releases and activity

The band releases a four-track EP in 2011, which gives it a strong start in the Dutch music scene. Scarlet Mae later raises funds through crowdfunding for its debut album, which appears in 2013.

Performances and recognition

Scarlet Mae performs at Eurosonic/Noorderslag and Appelpop, two notable Dutch festivals, and supports Jonny Lang at Paradiso Main Hall in Amsterdam. The band also receives national radio airplay. In 2013 it tours the UK, with a performance at The Great Escape among the highlights.

Debut album collaborators

For the debut album, Marije van Rijn works with pianist Daan Herweg, who has also worked with Caro Emerald, and guitarist Paul Willemsen, whose credits include Ruben Hein and Beans and Fatback. Willemsen also produces the album.
