Sarcófago are a black/thrash metal band from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, active from 1985 to 2000. They form in 1985 with Antichrist on vocals, Incubus on bass, Butcher on guitars and D.D. Crazy on drums. Wagner “Antichrist” Lamounier, formerly a vocalist in Sepultura, joins soon after leaving that Brazilian death/thrash metal band.

Overview

Sarcófago are regarded as one of the pioneers of black metal and as one of the most influential black metal bands of the 1980s. Their music sits at the intersection of black metal, death metal and thrash metal, and they are also associated with blackened thrash metal.

Early activity

The band first appears on the Warfare Noise I compilation in 1986, alongside Mutilator, Chakal and Holocausto. This early compilation appearance helps place them within the development of Brazil’s extreme metal scene.

Influence

Sarcófago are cited as an influence by several notable black metal musicians, including Euronymous of Mayhem, Fenriz of Darkthrone, Marko Laiho of Beherit and Satyr of Satyricon.
