Sarah Blackwood

Sarah Blackwood is a Canadian singer and songwriter from Burlington, Ontario, born in 1980. She is associated with rockabilly, country, rock and folk, and is also known as a member of The Creepshow and Walk off the Earth. She is not the same person as the singer of Dubstar and Client.

Background and style

Blackwood grows up listening to her father’s rock and roll record collection, and she starts playing guitar at the age of twelve when her father gives her an acoustic guitar and teaches her the basics. Her writing is shaped by old country and rock music, and her songs often deal with love, personal struggles and difficult periods in her life.

Solo work

Her solo work includes the album Way Back Home, which is described as a stripped-down acoustic release, and Wasting Time, her second solo album. Wasting Time is a roots country record that also includes elements of gospel, pop and soul. The album features contributions from Daniel Flamm, who adds vocals, lead guitar, banjo and piano, and from producer Gianni Luminati, who plays percussion, ukulele, mandolin and bass. Other guest musicians include her brother Ian Blackwood, her father Mike Blackwood, her bandmate Sean “Sickboy” McNab and Lee Williamson on lap steel.

Live performance and collaborations

Blackwood tours extensively and is known for a live show that is carefully developed. Her solo recordings also involve family members, friends and collaborators drawn from her wider musical circle.
