Saor

Saor is a one-man metal project from Glasgow, Scotland, formed in 2012 by Andy Marshall. The name means “free” in Scottish and Irish Gaelic. The project combines atmospheric black metal with Scottish folk music, post-rock and folk metal, drawing on Celtic instrumentation such as tin whistle, bagpipes and bodhrán alongside distorted guitars and black metal vocals.

Style and themes

Saor’s material focuses on Scottish heritage, Highland landscapes, nature and sorrow. Marshall’s writing reflects a strong connection to the Scottish Highlands, its culture and history. Alongside original lyrics, some texts are taken from the work of well-known Scottish poets.

Saor is signed to the German label Northern Silence Productions. The discography listed includes Roots (released in 2013 and re-released in 2014), Aura (2014), Guardians (2016), Forgotten Paths (2019) and Origins (2022).
