San Proper is a DJ and producer from Amsterdam, associated with the city’s underground club scene and with house, disco and eclectic dancefloor sets. He plays in clubs, bars and lounges across Holland and at major summer and dance festivals, and he holds a residency at Lowlands, one of Europe’s major summer festivals.
In Amsterdam, he runs The Black Disco Bust, a club night focused on old-school underground disco. The event builds a cult following and features guest DJs including Daniel Wang, Alton Miller, Kalabrese and Trus'me. In 1998, together with Alan Luna, he starts Choque, a club night centred on deeper, warmer house music. He organises these nights at Amsterdam venues including Mazzo, Bitterzoet, Club 11 and Sugar Factory.
Before working mainly as a DJ, San Proper begins as a guitar player and performs with several live bands. In 1995 he forms The Mindmenders, a funk and hip hop group, which wins De Grote prijs van Nederland in 1999. After that, he focuses on solo production and DJ work.
As a producer, he works with Amsterdam artists and producers including Melon, Tom Trago, Cinnaman, Steven de Peven, the Bootleg Bitches, Meikbar and De Schepper, also known as Overlast. He releases music on Rushhour, Soulrock and BangBang records. In January 2007 he begins his Proper A'dam Family Series, and he also remixes Ricardo Villalobos on Perlon with the track “Electonic Water- It ate my quarter”.
He also plays live in Podload, a formation with Steven de Peven on bass, Jos de Haas on percussion, Tom Trago on synthesizers, Jan Overblast on drums and Proper on guitars.
