Samuel Zasada is an Oxford group that begins as a solo project by David Ashbourne before developing into a band line-up. The act focuses on acoustic performance, with vocal interplay playing a central role. The recorded songs are described as subtle and ethereal, with layered arrangements and vocal harmonies becoming more important as the project expands beyond its original solo format.

Formation and line-up

Originally, Samuel Zasada is David Ashbourne performing alone. After recording as a solo act and finding more scope in adding other instruments and harmonies, Ashbourne forms a band. The group line-up includes Luci, Ashbourne’s partner, on acoustic guitar and vocals, Tom, a close friend, on bass and vocals, and Mark, Ashbourne’s brother, on drums.

Sound and performance

The group is noted for the interaction between the three vocalists, along with Ashbourne’s microphone technique, which contributes to its live sound. Its music is characterised as understated but expansive, with gothic and earthy qualities and lyrics that are considered poignant. The arrangement style is built around acoustic textures, vocal layers and a dramatic but restrained feel.

Early recognition and live appearances

The project’s first demo review appears in March 2009. A later demo receives a Demo of the Month award from Nightshift, Oxford Music Mag, after an initially less favourable review. The group also performs at Oxford Punt and at Cowley Road Carnival in July 2010.

Releases

The band issues an EP in early August, after the move from solo recording to fuller band arrangements.
