Sam Brown

Sam Brown is a UK singer and songwriter from Stratford, London, born in 1964. Her work sits across blue-eyed soul, jazz, jazz pop, pop, pop rock and rock, and she is also described as an English jazz and R&B singer.

Background

She is the daughter of pop guitarist Joe Brown and backing singer Vicki Brown. She appears as a singer with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and in 1977 she is a backing singer on the Small Faces’ final album In the Shade. She also sings with her mother under the name the Lillettes on Steve Marriott’s Packet of Three: Live.

Albums and singles

Brown records her debut album Stop! with her brother Pete Brown as producer. The single “Stop” follows in 1988 and later reaches number four in the UK charts, while the album also charts strongly and sells 2.5 million copies worldwide. Her second album April Moon follows in 1990 and also produces chart singles, though sales are lower than her debut. Her third album 43 Minutes appears in 1993 and is also a weaker commercial release. She later releases the independently issued Box in 1997, followed by Reboot in 2000.

Later activity

Brown spends time as a featured vocalist with Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and is a backing singer on Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell tour in 1994. In 2003 she appears in a BBC interview performing with ukulele and singing “Kiss of Love”. Her later releases include Of the Moment and the acoustic EP Ukulele and Voice, recorded with her father. She also makes new tracks available online and offers demo recordings through her fan club site.
