Sam Bradley

Sam Bradley is a British singer-songwriter associated with folk and blues. He is born in London in 1986 and begins his early schooling in Hong Kong at the age of three. After his parents divorce, he moves with his mother to Nashville, where he grows up around country music. His family later moves between England, Sri Lanka, the Caribbean and Canada, and those shifts shape his early life and musical outlook.

Early life and influences

Bradley starts writing songs from an early age. In London, he enrols in a liberal arts school in the city in 1997, but soon becomes dissatisfied with academic life and turns more fully toward music. His musical education comes from artists including Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Tim Buckley and Johnny Lee Hooker. He also draws on the blues through his father and on songwriting from his mother, an Irish-Canadian singer-songwriter. While growing up, he listens to artists such as Janis Joplin, Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson.

Performing and recording

Bradley begins performing in venues that will take him, including Irish pubs, squat parties and Tall Poppy’s weekly showcase. In the summer of 2004, he leaves school and moves to Vancouver, where he helps run a small music night at a local café. He records material both on a borrowed four-track and on his computer. His performances become known for his guitar playing and for his voice.

His work combines folk songwriting with blues and country influences, reflecting the musical environments he moves through in childhood and adolescence.
