Safire

Safire is the name of more than one artist. One is Wilma Cosme, a freestyle singer-songwriter born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and based in New York City. She begins her career as a session vocalist before an audition for Cutting Records brings her into the mainstream. She becomes known as one of freestyle’s best-known female performers and is associated with a run of 1980s pop and freestyle singles including “Don’t Break My Heart”, “Let Me Be the One”, “Boy I’ve Been Told” and “Thinking of You”.

After her second album, I Wasn’t Born Yesterday, her career slows in the 1990s as other styles become more dominant than freestyle, though she continues to tour for a loyal audience. In 1996 she releases her third album, Atrevida, a salsa record. Her fourth album, Bringing Back the Groove, appears in 2001 and returns her to the charts with “Don’t Break My Heart 2002” and a freestyle version of New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain”. A later single, “Exotique”, is a dance track.
