Roy Davis Jr. is a DJ and producer from Van Nuys, United States, born in 1970. He works across hip hop, R&B and dance hall, and is also associated with house music, including deep house and acid house.

Career

He grows up in Chicago, Illinois and is influenced early on by the house pioneer Lil' Louis. In the late 1980s he starts his own production company called Phuture. He releases work on labels including Large, Ubiquity, Nice+Smooth Ultramedia and Scion.

Phuture and related projects

In the 1990s, Davis is a member of the acid-house group Phuture. Other associated groups and projects include The Chicago Bad Boys, Angora, Phortune, Soldiers of Universal Love, Two Tribes Project, Phuture the Next Generation, Fade 2 tha Phuture, Phuture 303, 3 tha Hardway, The Original Creators and Men From the Nile.

Gabriel

He teams with Chicago vocalist Peven Everett in the 1990s on “Gabriel”, a track that receives wide radio and club play internationally. The single sells more than 250,000 copies and appears on many compilations, including Gilles Peterson’s Desert Island Mix. Its success leads Davis towards a more soulful and spiritual house style.
