Roughneck Riot

Roughneck Riot are a punk group from Manchester that formed in 2005 and remain active. They are a six-piece band made up of Samuel Bell, Caitlin Costello, Chris Green, Matty Humphries, Ryan Taylor and Tez Walker. Their sound sits within punk, with their own description also placing them in folk punk and Celtic punk territory.

Style and influences

The band describes its music as a form of contemporary hardcore folk, shaped by traditional folk music from around the world. Their stated influences include The Pogues, Flogging Molly, Levellers, Johnny Cash and The Clash. Their lyrics and stated outlook emphasise playing music for people regardless of race, nationality, age, gender or sexuality.

Career and releases

Roughneck Riot begin in March 2005 in Warrington before later being associated with Manchester. In 2009 they undergo a line-up change and expand from a four-piece of teenage musicians into the six-piece line-up they have since maintained. By the end of 2010 they release their debut album, Night Train with the Reaper. They also release the four-track EP Same Again Tomorrow.

Live work and touring

The band builds a reputation for a busy live schedule, with regular gigs across the UK and two European tours. They support a number of acts including The Real McKenzies, Sham 69, Demented Are Go!, Street Dogs, Shane MacGowan, The Creepshow, Swingin’ Utters, Talco and The Buccaneers. In 2011 they also tour the UK with The Real McKenzies, Hated Til Proven and Faintest Idea.

Public image

The group presents itself as a voice within punk and folk punk, with a politically aware stance and an emphasis on making music that reflects their lives. Their early press describes them as an energetic and raucous live band with a dense, melodic sound.
