Rosie Flores

Rosie Flores is a country and rockabilly singer and guitarist from San Antonio, Texas, born in 1950. She is associated with alternative country, country and rockabilly, and her work also draws on honky tonk, jazz and the Tex-Mex sounds of her heritage. Raised in Southern California, she becomes an important figure in the Los Angeles, Austin and Nashville music scenes from the late 1970s onward.

Style and career

Flores is known for a high-energy rockabilly style and for her guitar playing, particularly her solo work. Her performances combine honky tonk, rockabilly and jazz elements, and she builds her sound around the traditional music of her background. Her live reputation extends through honky-tonks across the United States, from Boston to Bakersfield.

She performs as part of Screamin’ Sirens and also records as a solo artist. Her recordings appear on the Billboard and Gavin charts, and several of her songs are featured in seven motion pictures. She also appears on nationally broadcast television programmes including Austin City Limits and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Recognition

Early in her career, while recording for Warner Bros. Records, Flores receives a nomination from the Academy of Country Music in California for Horizon Artist. In 2000, she wins the LA Weekly Music Award for Best Rockabilly Swing Artist. Her playing and performances also draw praise from the Los Angeles Times and Guitar Player magazine.
