Rose Elinor Dougall
Rose Elinor Dougall is a singer, songwriter and keyboardist from Hampstead, United Kingdom. Born in 1986, she is a former member of The Pipettes and also appears as a member of Innerspace Orchestra and The WAEVE. Her work is associated with alternative rock, indie rock and singer-songwriter music.
Career
After leaving The Pipettes in 2008, Dougall begins releasing solo material under her own name. Her debut solo single, Another Version of Pop Song, appears in 2008, followed by Start/Stop/Synchro in 2009. Her debut album, Without Why, follows in 2010.
Her solo writing moves away from the style associated with her previous group and into a more psychedelic-folk and dream-pop direction. The songs develop from material she writes on her own and later refines with Brighton producer Lee Baker. The recordings use a range of instruments including dulcimers, harps, drum machines, strings and horns, with Dougall’s alto voice remaining central.
Style and influences
Her solo material draws on a wide set of influences, including Sandy Denny, Smiths-era Morrissey and Broadcast. The songs are presented as self-contained pieces rather than highly structured pop songs, with an emphasis on atmosphere, melody and lyrical detail.
Solo releases
Another Version of Pop Song is framed as a break from her girl-group past. Start/Stop/Synchro follows and attracts attention from a number of music publications. Without Why completes the first stage of her solo career.
