Rob Hall is a DJ from the United Kingdom associated with Skam and Gescom. His sets move between techno, electronica, industrial, EBM, rave and electro, and he is known for combining these styles into a single, continuous flow while adapting his selections to the performers and audience on the night.

Career

Hall begins his career at Megatripolis, a weekly techno night at London’s Heaven, where his first appearance is with Autechre in 1992. His connection with Autechre remains long established, and he plays as support DJ on many of the duo’s tours. He also contributes productions, remixes and live sets to Gescom, a collective that includes Autechre, Russell Haswell, Andy Maddocks, Bola and Mike Williamson.

From 1995 he promotes and serves as resident DJ at club events in Manchester, where he brings artists including Aphex Twin, Plaid, Boards of Canada, Altern 8, Matthew Herbert, Team Doyobi, Mike Dred, Freeform, Req, Squarepusher, Ceephax Acid Crew and Pole to play there, often for the first time.

Skam Recordings

Between 1995 and 2006, Hall works closely with Andy Maddocks and Ged O’Hara on Skam Recordings. The label releases music by Gescom, Bola, Shadowhuntaz and Boards of Canada.

Performances and approach

Hall uses new technology in his DJ setup and usually performs with Finalscratch, which allows him to draw on a wider range of music, including unreleased material and re-edits. He also plays at clubs and festivals internationally, including Sonar, Coachella, All Tomorrow’s Parties and Phoenix Festival, and he opens for Bjork in Iceland as well as appearing at Warp’s 10th Birthday Party.

Reputation

He is widely regarded as an influential DJ in his field, and artists including Mark Broom, Surgeon, Regis, Ellen Allien, Meat Beat Manifesto, Andrea Parker, Plaid, LFO, Squarepusher, Speedy J, Marco Passarani and Adam X speak highly of his sets.
