Revival

Revival is a Washington, DC band active since 2004, with members Dave Bryson, Derry deBorja, Josh Read, Evan Berodt and Noel White. The name is used by several different groups, but this act is the alt. country outfit formed by Josh Read and Evan Berodt, both of whom have links to Canyon and Jay Farrar’s touring band.

Background

The band begins in April 2006, when Read and Berodt start shaping material that develops into an album. Recording takes place at J. Robbins’ studio in the industrial area between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Noel White joins from nearby, and the project expands through contributions from other musicians.

Sound and songwriting

Revival’s music is rooted in alt. country, but the band also draws on older folk forms, saloon-style standards, Washington, DC post-punk and early psychedelic rock. Josh Read writes the songs and sings lead, and his writing moves between raw sexuality and spare balladry.

Personnel and collaborators

Alongside Read, Berodt and White, the recordings and performances feature Mikal Evans on harmonies, Hash Vyas on bass, Brian Clancy on four-string, and Josh Wenk on drums. Clancy also plays with Dawn of Man. The live band is presented as a broader collective, with players joining for individual shows, songs or longer periods.
