Return to Dust

Return to Dust is a heavy rock and punk band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2022, the group draws on grunge, rock, punk rock and punk, and cites Alice in Chains, Deftones and SOAD as influences.

Members

The band has three members: Matty on rhythm guitar, vocals and songwriting, Graham on bass, vocals and songwriting, and Sebastian on lead guitar and drums. Matty and Graham are described as friends since middle school, having grown up in Midlothian, and they later move to Los Angeles, where they meet Sebastian.

Releases

Return to Dust releases its debut EP, Black Road, in 2023.

Songwriting and recording

The band describes its writing process as collaborative, with music and lyrics developed together. Matty and Graham often begin with improvised vocal sounds over a chord progression or riff, then shape words and phrases around the song’s mood. They sometimes enter the studio with a fully finished track and sometimes with only a verse and chorus.

Other details

The group also gains attention through its TikTok account, @returntodustband. In discussion of their lives outside music, Matty mentions gaming, audio production, reading, working out, drawing, charcoal work and home improvement; Graham mentions rock climbing, gaming, visual art and photo-editing; and Sebastian mentions drawing more and going to the skatepark. The band also refers to Ryan, a friend who works under their producer Jim, as someone who initially encourages them to pursue music.
