Remark

Remark is a beatmaker and instrumentalist from Karlsruhe and Leipzig, Germany. He also works under the alias Rufus Grimes. His music and illustration practice are central to his work, and he builds tracks from a loop-based hip-hop approach that he has followed since youth.

Style and influences

His debut album, Enjoying Mistakes, appears in 2011 and combines familiar harmonic and structural elements with more abstract, expansive arrangements. Remark draws on rap from the 1980s and 1990s as well as the later trip-hop movement, and he names Prefuse 73, Dimlite, Exile, Nosaj Thing, Suff Daddy and Flying Lotus among his contemporary influences.

Approach

He describes his method as intentionally loose and non-standard, allowing samples to remain unpolished and arranging them according to how he hears the finished piece in his head rather than following conventional production rules. In his own framing, what others might call mistakes are part of what he values in the music.
