ReDux

ReDux is a dub-oriented music act. The project is also referred to as Redux in the available material, and the name appears in connection with a New York-based jazz, rock and funk band that has also used the name Ripplegroove.

Background and activity

The band forms in 2001 and goes through several changes in personnel, home city and name. Over that period it has four different line-ups, moves through three hometowns and uses four names. Its later development places it in New York after a move from San Diego, where the change of city also brings a different local music scene and a different working environment.

Line-up changes

The band loses drummer Jed after four years and searches New York for a replacement. The first drummer it auditions, RJ Rabin, becomes the newest member and is described by the group as a strong fit because of the way he plays and the immediate chemistry in the room. Tom Burda plays guitar, and Joe Hanley plays keyboards.

Releases and reception

The debut album Under The Microscope is released in 2006. It reaches number 14 on the CMJ Jazz Charts and number 9 on the Jambands.com Top 40. A second album is in preparation, and the group is also working on new material in RJ Rabin’s Green Room.

Performances and recognition

ReDux opens for Karl Denson at the Highline Ballroom and wins the Relix Magazine Jamoff Contest. The group’s sound is described as having a simpler, bigger feel with a deeper pocket after the addition of RJ Rabin.

Style

The available material places the act in jazz, rock and funk territory, with an emphasis on instrumental performance and a flexible, changing approach to sound and lineup. It is also tagged as electro, electronic, progressive trance, electronica and Goa Trance, with dub noted as an authoritative classification.
