Red Sleeping Beauty

Red Sleeping Beauty is a Swedish indie pop group active from 1992 to 1997, with Niklas Angergård as a member. The band forms around Kristina Borg, Mikael Matsson and Niklas Angergård, with bassist Carl-Johan Näsström joining after the recording of Pop Sounds and remaining until 1997. It is associated with Swedish pop, twee and indie pop, and releases material on labels including Chili Music Korea.

Formation and early development

The group begins in 1991 as a duo with a six-track cassette demo, before expanding after Niklas Angergård moves to Stockholm. The line-up then develops into a trio, and the band starts writing songs with a more up-tempo, upbeat character. After Pop Sounds, Carl-Johan Näsström joins so the group has a fuller live line-up and more secure bass playing.

Releases and activity

Red Sleeping Beauty builds a catalogue through releases on a range of labels in different countries. The band ends its first run in 1997 after the break-up of the relationship between Mikael and Kristina and after nearly a decade together. In 2013 the group reforms and records a new full-length album, with the single Always appearing on US indie label Shelflife in 2015. The comeback album Kristina follows in 2016 on Labrador.
