Rebecca Black
Rebecca Black is an American pop singer and songwriter from Irvine, California. Born in 1997, she begins singing at a young age and develops an interest in performance and music.
Career
She gains wide attention in 2011 when the video for her debut single, “Friday,” goes viral on YouTube and across social media. The song divides opinion: it reaches number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 but is also heavily criticised by listeners and music reviewers, with some calling it one of the worst songs ever made.
Over time, Black moves from internet fame towards a more established music career, developing a more mature and distinctive sound. She works across pop and related styles including electropop, hyperpop, R&B and alternative pop. Her 2021 EP Rebecca Black Was Here and 2023 debut studio album Let Her Burn are described as critically well received. Her 2025 project Salvation is a club-oriented release that blends electropop, hyperpop and EDM.
Personal and advocacy work
Black comes out as queer in 2020 and becomes an advocate for self-expression, LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness.
