Raster Noton
Raster Noton is a German electronic music label cooperation formed from the merger of rastermusic and noton.archiv für ton und nichtton in 1999. It develops a shared platform for sound and art design, with a strong focus on scientific processes and digital aesthetics.
History
Rastermusic is founded in 1996 by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider. Its original aim is to present repetitive minimal music with an orientation towards pop, and it releases CDs in a serial design format centred on the aesthetics of digital sound manipulation.
Noton.archiv für ton und nichtton is founded by Carsten Nicolai as a platform for conceptual and experimental projects linking music, art and science. After the release of the ongoing Clear series in 1996, the idea of a conceptual CD magazine develops and is later realised as the 20'to 2000 series on raster-noton between 1999 and 2000.
Label focus
Since 1999, Olaf Bender and Carsten Nicolai run Raster Noton as a label for innovative digital music. The project combines electronic music with conceptual approaches to sound, design and visual art.
