Ramsey

Ramsey is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, writer and producer, born Rebecca Fisher in Las Vegas. Her music sits in dark pop and indie electronic territory, with references including Glass Animals, Portishead and Phantogram. She begins releasing music through SoundCloud in January 2016 and quickly gathers a large online audience, with her early tracks attracting millions of plays and coverage from a wide range of music and entertainment blogs.

Early life and background

She arrives in Los Angeles after spending time in Oregon while working on college prerequisites. After graduating high school at 16, she works waiting tables before taking a first job in the city stocking shelves at a Vons store on Sunset and Hillhurst. She uses the spare time to write lyrics and develop songs. As a child, she sings and performs for her family, sings in the school choir, and plays in bands during high school.

Recording and sound

A friend installs Ableton on her computer, and she starts making music at home in her West Hollywood bedroom. She produces the beats and all other parts of her recordings herself, using heavy electronic elements and a mood-led style that she describes as built from stripped-back passages and dense atmosphere. Her songs include “Wrong Heart,” the first track she releases, and her self-titled debut EP appears in 2017.

Live performance

In performance, Ramsey sings while working with a DJ and a drummer rather than presenting the full studio setup on stage. Her live show is central to her work, with performance presented as the part of music-making she values most.

Career development

After leaving the grocery store job, she moves to Hancock Park and later writes one-off songs for a YouTube performer for 500 dollars per song. She also connects with a social media manager who supports her music. Her early online profile is strengthened by features across more than 60 blogs, including Perez Hilton, Huffington Post and AXS.com.

Other activity

The name Ramsey is also used by an alternative punk band formed in Knoxville, Tennessee in 2012, with Nick Allen on guitar and vocals, Chris Hampton on bass, and Alex Scott on drums.
