Rainbow Kitten Surprise is an alternative rock and indie rock group from North Carolina. The band forms in Boone and starts in 2013, with Ela Melo and Darrick “Bozzy” Keller beginning to write and compose together while they are college students. The project grows from an acoustic duo into a full band.

Formation and members

After recording the first EP, Mary, in a dorm room at Appalachian State University, the group expands by adding Ethan Goodpaster on electric guitar, Jess Haney on drums, and Charlie Holt on bass. The group’s line-up includes five members, with Ela Melo listed as the only named member in the verified facts.

Style and influences

The band is associated with alternative rock, indie rock, rock, indie pop, indie, and folk. Its sound is described in terms of melodic guitar riffs, bass lines, and lyrics with substantial meaning. Influences include Modest Mouse, Lana Del Rey, and Kings of Leon.

Releases and recognition

Rainbow Kitten Surprise independently releases the album Seven, which later appears together with Mary as Seven + Mary. The title track Seven is featured on the IGN podcast Podcast Beyond!. The song Devil Like Me and its video help the band reach the final 24 in VH1’s Make A Band Famous contest, out of thousands of artists from across the United States. The live album RKS! Live from Athens, Georgia also appears in the band’s catalogue.
