Raffertie
Raffertie is the stage name of Benjamin Stefanski, a British composer, producer and DJ from the United Kingdom. He is active from 2007 and is based in London, England. His work spans electronic music, with links to dubstep and bass music, and he releases material through labels including Planet Mu, Black Acre, Super Recordings, Domino, Atlantic, Moshi Moshi and Ninja Tune.
Career
Raffertie studies Classical & Contemporary Music Composition at Birmingham Conservatoire and graduates in 2010. By that point he is already established in electronic music and has built a live reputation for energetic performances, appearing at venues and events including Fabric, Space, Glastonbury, Bestival and Glade Festival.
He first gains wider attention through radio support and sessions, including a BBC Radio 1 Experimental show session for Mary Anne Hobbs in January 2008 and a BBC Radio 1 session for Rob Da Bank in June 2009. His remix of Franz Ferdinand’s “No You Girls” is released on Domino in 2009, and his track “Do dat” appears on A Trak’s Fabric Live 45 mix the same year.
In 2010, his track “7th dimension” on Planet Mu is named record of the week on Nick Grimshaw’s BBC Radio 1 show. After graduating, he founds Super Recordings and later signs to Ninja Tune in 2011. His first physical release for the label, the Visual Acuity EP, is also named record of the week on Radio 1 and receives airplay from Rob Da Bank, Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Jen Long and Mary Anne Hobbs.
Releases and recognition
Raffertie’s debut album, Sleep of Reason, is released on Ninja Tune in 2013. Across his releases he works in different styles and receives praise from Simon Reynolds, Huw Stephens and Mary Anne Hobbs.
Labels and projects
Alongside recording under his own name, Raffertie runs the Super Recordings label. His catalogue includes releases for Planet Mu, Black Acre, Super Recordings, Domino, Atlantic, Moshi Moshi and Ninja Tune.
