Rae Sremmurd is an American hip hop duo from Tupelo, Mississippi, made up of brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi. The group is active from 2013 and works in hip hop, pop rap, and trap.

Background

The duo’s name comes from “Ear Drummers” spelled backwards. In 2013, Rae Sremmurd becomes the first act signed to EarDrummers Records, the label founded by producer Mike Will Made It and distributed through Interscope Records. They establish their own imprint, SremmLife Crew Records, in 2016.

Commercial breakthrough

Rae Sremmurd gains mainstream attention in 2014 with the singles “No Flex Zone”, “No Type”, and “Throw Sum Mo”. “Throw Sum Mo” features Nicki Minaj and Young Thug. All three singles reach the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and are certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Their debut studio album, SremmLife, appears in 2015 and is certified double platinum. In 2016, they release “Black Beatles” featuring Gucci Mane, which reaches number one on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by their second album, SremmLife 2, later that year.

Later albums

Their third studio release, SR3MM, appears in 2018 as a triple album and peaks at number six on the Billboard 200. Their fourth studio album, Sremm 4 Life, is released in 2023 and reaches number 28 on the same chart.

Solo activity

After this period, Swae Lee focuses more heavily on his solo work, especially following the 2018 single “Sunflower” with Post Malone.
