Prophets Of Rage

Prophets Of Rage is a hip hop group from Kaiserslautern, Germany, formed in 1992 and later ended. The group’s line-up is given as James Foster, Nickholas Michell and Arrigo Johnny Phillips.

Formation and early releases

The group forms in Kaiserslautern, where it develops as an experimental hip hop act. Its debut album, Unite or Perish, appears in 1994. The band tours with Megavier, and in 1993 Yeti joins after founder Ewol invites him into the group.

Line-up changes and later work

In 1996, after Yeti leaves, the group continues with Ewol and Styxx and adds Cave Dave on bass, Sebo on guitar and Jules on drums. Around this period DJ Amir and DJ Shadow support the project. The second album, Zen Gravy, follows in 1997 on Four Music, and includes a feature from DJ Amir of Dungeon Mastaz. The group also tours with Coolio and Coolen Saue.

Style and significance

The group is described as experimental hip hop with live band backing, using advanced rhyming and sharply produced tracks. Its activity is said to help shape the German hip hop scene.

The name is also used by an American rap rock supergroup formed in 2016, but that is a different act.
