Prolix is a drum and bass producer and DJ from London. He releases music in drum and bass, dubstep and electronic styles, and is associated with the labels Trendkill Records, Playaz Recordings, Metalheadz, Commercial Suicide, Ganja Tek, Project 51 and Virus.

Career

Prolix begins releasing on a range of respected drum and bass labels and builds a reputation for dark, heavy production and DJ sets. His work gains support from BBC 1Xtra and BBC Radio 1 DJs including Bailey, Friction and Mary Anne Hobbs, and he is described as a producer whose twisted beats and basslines attract attention in the scene.

He becomes part of the online music community Electronic Scene, where he meets Noisia. In 2004 he travels to Holland with Noisia to write tracks that later appear on Shadow Law Recordings and Cargo. A collaboration with Nocturnal, Crater, is picked up by Renegade Hardware. After Chase & Status ask him to remix Barbarian for their Ten Tonne EP, he is introduced to DJ Hype and Pascal.

Labels and releases

Prolix signs exclusively to Playaz, which leads to the creation of the Ganja Tek sub-label for releases that fit his sound. His first release on that imprint is Exile / Chokehold, and later releases on Ganja Tek are played by DJs across the world.

He launches his own imprint Trendkill Records in 2011. The label begins with Freeze Frame by Prolix backed with Con Artist by Gridlok and Skitty, followed by Who Run It and Skull Snapz by Prolix.

His back catalogue also includes releases on Bad Taste, Commercial Suicide, Project 51, C4C Recordings, Unique, BCUK’s Bad Taste, Virus, Viper, Integral and Metalheadz.

Collaborations and remixes

Prolix works with Gridlok, Klute, Noisia and MC Fats, and records with MC Coppa on a five-track EP titled On Like That. He also collaborates with Klute on a release, and with Temper D on Chainsaw and Doppelganger.

His remixes include work for Ed Rush and Optical, Chase & Status, Gridlok and Dom, and a remix of Ed Rush and Optical’s Get Ill on Virus.

Notable tracks

True Born Playa / Got to Roll, made with Gridlok and MC Fats, is described as his most significant release. Other tracks and releases linked to support from major DJs include Twisted Angel VIP from The Scourge EP, Throwdown, Brain Damage, No Pressure, Mean Streets, Eruption, Chainsaw, Visualize and Lounge Lizard.

Eruption is chosen for DJ Friction’s Ministry of Sound mix CD, and Pendulum includes it in a 1Xtra Essential Mix, alongside Prolix’s remix of London’s Burning.

Style and standing

Prolix is known for a distinctive production style built around heavy bass and dark drum and bass rhythms. He is also noted for being a strong DJ as well as a producer, and is regarded as one of the leading figures in drum and bass.
