Private School

Private School is a Canadian punk group from Vancouver, British Columbia. It forms in 1977, originally as an art school band, and goes through several line-up changes before settling on Andy Graffiti, Dave Gregg, Ron Nelson and Maddy Schenkel.

History and live work

The band plays many Rock Against shows, including events linked to prisons and nuclear disarmament, and appears in New Wave showcases alongside D.O.A., Pointed Sticks, Subhumans and the Dishrags. In 1979, it opens for The Police on their first North American tour. Creative differences lead to a split in late 1979 and early 1980.

Members and later projects

Earlier rotating members include Tony Bardach on bass, from Pointed Sticks, and Reed Urchuck on keyboard, who also plays in Exxotone, the Shades and Obelinskis. After Private School ends, Nelson and Maddy form The Singing Cowboys, Magic Dragon and Courage of Lassie. Clay forms Warsaw in 1980 and PAZ in 1982, and Makaroff joins PAZ after his ska group The Invaders breaks up. Gregg later joins D.O.A.

Recordings and related acts

Private School appears on the Vancouver Complication LP and releases the EP Lost in Action, as well as three videos. The name also belongs to a separate West Coast hip hop trio made up of Da Golden Ray, Jun Dax and Ian, with three releases issued on Diminished Fifth Recordings and Power Shovel Audio.
