Prinzhorn Dance School

Prinzhorn Dance School are a UK alternative rock group formed in 2004 and made up of Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn. Their music is described as sparse, uncompromising and idiosyncratic, and they are associated with alternative rock, art punk and post-punk.

Recordings and label work

The group is signed to the New York label DFA. Their first release for the label is a self-recorded and self-produced 7-inch single featuring “You Are The Space Invader” and “Eat, Sleep”, limited to 500 copies. Their debut album is recorded in isolation in a rented barn in Sussex, after the songs are written in the disused chapel building they call home. The album is mixed in New York with DFA and is released in 2007 in the UK and North America.

Working methods and reputation

Prinzhorn Dance School keep a low public profile. They give very few interviews and their official website rarely shows their faces. They prefer to work privately, and they are noted for finding photo-shoots vain, press releases dishonest and superlatives embarrassing. Their approach centres on isolation, with writing and recording done in a sparse and unusual setting.

Live activity and name

The group builds a following through live performances and completes several UK and European tours. Their American tour is cancelled because of visa problems. Their name is believed to come from Dr Hans Prinzhorn, who collects art made by patients under his care in a mental health context.
