Primate is a name used by several different acts and artists. One is the alias of Belgian jump-up drum and bass producer Marcel Matheussen, who starts making music at 11 and later plays general events and birthday parties before developing a wider interest in electronic music and drum and bass. He becomes known for screechy basslines and hard-hitting drums, and gets his first dedicated drum and bass show in 2018.
Joe Vince
Another Primate is the alias of electronic music producer Joe Vince, from Brighton in the UK. He releases music on Hospital Records, Night Owl Collective and VALE, and co-founds SmallPrint Recordings.
Heavy music projects
Primate is also the name of a hardcore and grindcore supergroup featuring Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth, Bill Kelliher of Mastodon, Mike Brennan, Dave Whitworth and Shayne Huff of The Despised. Its first released material is the EP Draw Back A Stump, which includes six original Primate songs and a cover of Black Flag.
The name is also used by a UK hardcore band from Birmingham in the West Midlands, a rapper from Minneapolis, and by a Chilean group formed in Santiago, with Marcelo Aliaga on vocals and guitar, Carlos Cárdenas on bass and backing vocals, Marcelo Pudu-Muñoz on guitar and Ricardo Portalier on drums. That Chilean band’s first album is titled Primate and is recorded at Rec Studios in 1996.
