Primal Fear

Primal Fear is a German heavy metal band from Esslingen am Neckar, formed in 1997. The group works in heavy metal, power metal and speed metal, and remains active.

Formation and early line-up

The band is founded in October 1997 by singer Ralf Scheepers and bassist and vocalist Mat Sinner. Scheepers has previously sung with Tyran Pace, F.B.I. and Gamma Ray, and his involvement follows an unsuccessful audition to replace Rob Halford in Judas Priest. The idea for the band develops after a performance with Scheepers’ Judas Priest cover group Just Priest, which also includes Sinner and guitarist Tom Naumann.

Primal Fear signs to Nuclear Blast Records later in 1997. The early line-up centres on Scheepers and Sinner, with Naumann becoming part of the initial history of the group.

Albums, touring and line-up changes

The debut album, Primal Fear, appears in 1998 and reaches number 48 in Germany. In the same year the band tours with Running Wild and HammerFall. Jaws of Death follows in 1999. After that release, Tom Naumann leaves because of health issues and is temporarily replaced by Alex Beyrodt, while Henny Wolter joins permanently in January 2000.

Nuclear Fire is released in early 2001, and the supporting world tour includes the band’s first concerts in the United States as well as appearances at Metal Meltdown Festival and Milwaukee Metalfest. Black Sun follows in 2002 and reaches number 55 in Germany. Guitarist Mike Chlasciak contributes solos to “Fear” and “Armageddon”. During the tour, Henny Wolter leaves and Tom Naumann returns.

The band continues with Devil's Ground in 2004, which reaches number 67 in Germany, and promotes it with a world tour that includes “Metal Is Forever”. Seven Seals is recorded in Vancouver and Stuttgart and released in 2005, followed by European and Japanese touring and performances with Helloween.

In 2006 Primal Fear leaves Nuclear Blast and signs with Frontiers Records. Nuclear Blast issues the compilation Metal is Forever that year. The band also performs at Wacken Open Air in August 2006. During the recording of New Religion in 2007, Henny Wolter returns as second guitarist and Tom Naumann departs. The album reaches number 60 in Germany, and the band tours Europe and the United States, including a co-headlining appearance at ProgPower USA VIII and dates with U.D.O.

Later period

Stefan Leibing leaves in 2008 and Magnus Karlsson, who has already contributed solos to New Religion, replaces him. The album 16.6 appears in 2009 and reaches number 46 in Germany, number 52 in Sweden and number 28 in Japan. The song “Six Time Dead” is issued with a video on MySpace. The band then tours extensively in South America, North America, Europe and Japan, recording live material along the way.

Unbreakable is released in 2012, followed by the “Metal Nation” tour across Europe and South America. Delivering the Black appears in 2014. In August that year, Randy Black leaves and former U.D.O. drummer Francesco Jovino joins, alongside the returning Tom Naumann.

Rulebreaker is released in 2016, and Apocalypse follows in 2018. The band announces Metal Commando in 2020, and releases the single “Along Came the Devil” in the same period. The EP I Will Be Gone, featuring Tarja Turunen, appears in 2021. The studio albums Code Red and Domination are listed in the band’s discography, with Code Red in 2023 and Domination in 2025.
