Pretty Boy Floyd is a glam metal band from Hollywood, United States, active from 1987 to the present. The group is associated with glam metal and heavy metal, and is part of the Los Angeles hard rock and hair metal scene of the late 1980s.

Formation and early line-up

The band forms in Hollywood in 1988, with guitarist Kristy Majors and vocalist Steve Summers as the core of the original line-up. The name is chosen because it fits the group’s image as a tough, youthful rock band.

Recording and MCA Records

After playing only eight shows, the band signs to MCA Records. Its debut album, Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz, appears in 1989 and is produced by Howard Benson. The album becomes the band’s best-known release and is widely associated with the tail end of the sleazy rock era.

Reception and visibility

Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz is named by Metal Edge and Spin as one of the strongest albums in its genre. The band appears on the cover of Kerrang!, and the videos for “I Wanna Be With You” and “Rock and Roll is Gonna Set the Night on Fire” reach the Top 20 on MTV. The group tours internationally and is described as a leading band on the Sunset Strip, with attendance records said to exceed those held by Van Halen and Warrant. The album sells 750,000 copies worldwide.

Pretty Boy Floyd continues to record and tour. A later line-up includes Steve Summers on vocals, Kristy Majors on guitar, Criss 6 on bass, and Ben Graves on drums.
