Posthuman

Posthuman is a UK electronic group active since 1999 and based in Scotland. The act consists of cousins Richard Bevan and Joshu Doherty, and is known for multi-layered electronic music built around intricate drum programming. Roland 808 and 909 drum machines are central to their sound.

History and development

The duo form in 1999 in Manchester, England, and move to London in 2000. They run their own imprint, Seed Records, and organise a series of events in an abandoned tube station in London between 2001 and 2005. At these events, Posthuman and label associates perform alongside guest artists including Aphex Twin, Plaid and Luke Vibert.

Style and releases

Most of Posthuman’s output sits within IDM, but the group also experiments beyond that frame. Their self-titled EP from 2002 combines hip hop and heavy metal with electronica, while the 2006 album The People’s Republic draws heavily on post-rock. They are also associated with Balkan Recordings.

Aliases and related projects

Bevan and Doherty record under several other names, including Walter Becomes Wendy, Snapmouth, On / Off and The House Husbands. Doherty is also part of Digitonal, a project that combines modern classical music and electronica, and of the hardcore breaks outfit AGT Rave Cru.
