Poppy

Poppy is the professional name of Moriah Rose Pereira, a singer, songwriter, actress and model from Houston, Texas. She is also known as Moriah Poppy and That Poppy. Her music is associated with pop, electropop, alternative metal, nu metal and metal, and it often combines catchy pop writing with a darker edge.

Career

Poppy signs to Island Records in early 2014. More than a year later, she releases her debut single, Everybody Wants to Be Poppy, followed in early 2016 by her first extended play, Bubblebath. In late 2016 she becomes the face of Sanrio’s Hello Sanrio collection.

She signs to Mad Decent in the summer of 2017 and releases her first studio album, Poppy.Computer, in October of that year. To support it, she undertakes her first tour, which covers 34 cities in North America and includes shows in London and Tokyo. In 2018, she releases the web television series I’m Poppy and her second studio album, Am I a Girl?

Her second extended play, Choke, appears in 2019. In 2020 she releases her third studio album, I Disagree, along with a deluxe edition titled I Disagree (more). Later that year she issues the holiday-themed EP A Very Poppy Christmas.

In 2021, Poppy performs the song “EAT” at the Grammy Awards ceremony; the track appears on EAT (NXT Soundtrack), her fourth extended play. Her fourth studio album, Flux, follows later in 2021. Her fifth studio album, Negative Spaces, is released in 2024. Her later releases include a feature on “from me to u” with BABYMETAL in 2025, the single “End of You” later that year, and the singles “Unravel”, “Bruised Sky” and “Guardian” from the album Empty Hands.

Work and style

Poppy’s background in performance includes 11 years as a dancer, and she says singing becomes her main focus after being bullied in middle school. She writes lyrics in journals and cites inspiration from her own experiences, her friends’ experiences and characters from films. Her influences include Jimmy Eat World, No Doubt and Blondie, and she also draws on J-pop. Her music is described as combining reggae-influenced rhythms, punk rock guitar and pop sensibility, with lyrics that often add humour and contrast to the surface sweetness of the songs.

She describes Everybody Wants to Be Poppy as her “theme song”, and songs such as “Lowlife” are noted for mixing playful imagery with sharper lyrical detail.

Other projects

Poppy appears as a public face for Sanrio’s Hello Sanrio collection in 2016. She also launches the web series I’m Poppy in 2018, and later begins Improbably Poppy on Veeps in October 2024, with each episode including a song performance.

Background

Poppy grows up in Nashville in a musical family: her father plays drums in a punk band and her brother also drums for several groups. She is known for a distinctive visual style that includes pastel hair and a quirky, unconventional image.
